Teaching

Made-to-measure writing and editing courses to hone your skills.

Got a team of keen but green writers? Perhaps you’re building a new team from scratch, or your overall demographic is first-jobbers. Maybe your people have some great writing skills but they need honing, or they don’t yet know how to edit (or receive edits).

Based on my lifelong experience as a writer and editor, from magazines to novels to consumer copy, my courses are designed to help your team help themselves. I offer a Storytelling 101 masterclass that whizzes through the ins and outs of structural editing, fast drafting, how to write a news story that delivers, sub-editing, proofreading, story structure, pace, feeling, atmosphere, voice — the works. It’s fun, interactive and has been reviewed as “the best training course I’ve ever had”. At the end, your team should feel confident in not only trying out their writing skills, but putting their editing chops to the test.

Following on from this overview session, I can also offer deep dives into the skills you need the most: perhaps that’s delivering or receiving structural edits. You’ve got your work back covered in red pen, client comments, and vague requests to ‘make this bit better’ — but what does that mean and how on earth do you tackle it? This small group session will give you the answers, with practical, interactive group work as well as my insights. Or maybe you want some quickfire training in proofreading, sub-editing, quality assurance or project management: I can design a course that suits your team, your budget and your needs.

Storytelling 101 can be delivered via Teams, Zoom or in person, and is ideal to give an overview introduction to everything to do with words. Deep dives work best in person, and are best tailor-made to your team. Get in touch to discuss  — I’m based in Eastbourne and can deliver sessions across the south east, including London.
